Islamabad: The Pakistan Army has confirmed that 18 soldiers were killed in an attack by Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) militants on a train in Balochistan.

The Pakistan Army stated that 18 out of 26 hostages held by the Balochistan Liberation Army were soldiers.

In a press briefing with Balochistan Chief Minister Sardar Farid Bughti, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry confirmed that the militants had killed 26 hostages before the military operation began.

“Of the 26 hostages, 18 were military and paramilitary personnel, three were government officials, and five were civilians,” he said. The army reported that five paramilitary Frontier Corps soldiers were killed during the operation. Four of them were killed when the militants attacked the train.

Balochistan Liberation Army militants also targeted the Zafar Express, a train carrying more than 400 passengers on Tuesday, taking the passengers hostage.

On Wednesday, security forces launched an operation on the hijacked train, ending the 30-hour siege. The operation successfully killed all 33 militants and rescued over 300 passengers.

According to army officials, a total of 354 hostages were rescued, including 37 passengers who were injured. ISPR’s Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry also accused India of creating unrest in the region.
