A building in northern Bangkok collapsed in just a few seconds. According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck the northwest of the capital city of Thailand, Sagang, at noon today.

A 30-story skyscraper under construction for government offices collapsed in Bangkok.

Bangkok: An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred within a 10 km radius of the Myanmar central region, and a 30-story skyscraper under construction collapsed, trapping 43 workers, according to police and medical officials. The strong earthquake caused the city to shake.

The building, located in the northern part of Bangkok, collapsed within seconds. The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred in the northwest of the city of Sagang at noon today.

Just a few minutes later, an aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in the same area. Thai authorities have declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, as confirmed by Prime Minister Petongtan Shinawatra

In Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, roof tiles fell from buildings, and roads collapsed. This is a sprawling city with highways that span up to 20 lanes. Staff wearing uniforms ran outside as debris fell from the ceiling, walls cracked, and some were seen trembling, crying, and trying to contact their loved ones.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties from the earthquake, but it caused panic in cities near northern Thailand and reached as far as Bangkok.

Damage to Buildings

The earthquake caused damage to buildings in Bangkok, and some metro and light rail services in the city were suspended. In China’s northwestern Yunnan province, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale also occurred.
