What are ATACMS Missiles? Why in news? Did Ukraine use it Against Russia??
ATACMS is a surface-to-surface, precision-strike missile system used by the US Army. Here’s an in-depth look:
1. Development :
Out of the door with Lockheed Martin, ATACMS was initially introduced in the late 1980s. The missile made up for the US Army’s older artillery systems and filled in gaps in precision, long-range firepower.
2. Capabilities
– Range: Depending on the version, the ATACMS missile can reach up to 300 kilometers, or 190 miles, to its target. It can also carry cluster munitions and high-explosive payloads or unitary warheads. The system uses GPS and inertial navigation for precision targeting. It is also able to hit enemy positions, air defense systems, supply depots, and command centres.
3. How It Works
ATACMS missiles are launched from the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) or M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). These vehicles provide mobility and quick deployment for the missile system.
4. Variants
– M39: The original version with a range of 165 km and cluster munitions.
– M39A1 (Block 1A): Extended range of 300 km with GPS guidance.
– M48 (Unitary): One large high-explosive warhead for accurate precision attacks.
– M57 (Unitary): Enhanced accuracy
5. Combat Employment
ATACMS has been employed in operations for:
– Gulf War (1991): First operational use in a combat theatre.
– Iraq War (2003): Struck key enemy infrastructure
– Current Deployments: Provided long-range artillery support when precision strikes are essential.
6. Export and International Interest
The United States has placed restrictions on exports of ATACMS due to the technological edge this system has over the MTCR, while its range is larger than any declared by most nations. However, certain variants have been authorized for some allies, including South Korea.
7. Controversy and Modernization
– Cluster Munitions: Some of the earlier versions contain a cluster warhead with unexploded ordnance.
– Upgrades: More recent variants have emphasized the limitation of collateral damage while enhancing accuracy with unitary warheads.
8. Future Developments
Lockheed Martin is developing a next-generation replacement known as the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), that will eventually replace ATACMS in the future with a longer-range and increased capabilities .
Why in news??? Did Ukraine use it against Russia??
In October 2023, the U.S. supplied Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, enabling Ukrainian forces to strike Russian airfields and logistical hubs, demonstrating its strategic value in modern conflicts. The missile has undergone continuous upgrades to improve accuracy, range, and lethality, ensuring its relevance in contemporary and future military operations. It is said to be that Ukraine recently used US made ATACMS Missiles to attack Russia after getting clearance from US. Russia’s response is yet awaited on this.
Summary
As a game-changer in modern warfare, ATACMS provides rapid, long-range, and precise strike capabilities. Though its role evolves, this remains an important tool for both U.S. forces and their allies.
