Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh died at AIIMS in Delhi on December 26 at the age of 92.

Manmohan Singh was known as the pioneer of economic liberalisation.

He served as the Prime Minister of India for 2 terms after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. Manmohan Singh is the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term.

The life of Manmohan Singh

Gah in undivided Punjab (now West Punjab in Pakistan) in 1932. Manmohan Singh was born to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur. Manmohan Singh’s family migrated to India at the time of partition in 1947.

Manmohan Singh lost his mother at a young age and was brought up by his grandmother. Manmohan Singh, who did his early schooling in Urdu medium, had shifted to Amritsar with his family in 1948. Singh studied at the Hindu College in Amritsar. He studied economics at the University of Punjab, then at Hoshiarpur. He received his BA degree and MA master’s degrees in 1952 and 1954, respectively, with a topper at the University of Punjab.

After completing his economics tripos at the University of Cambridge in 1957, Singh returned to India and served as a professor at the University of Punjab and Delhi.

In 1960, he received a DPhil from the University of Oxford. Singh, where he was a member of Nuffield College. After obtaining a doctorate in economics from Oxford, Singh had also worked at the United Nations during 1966-1969.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Singh held the post of Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India during 1972-1976. He held several important positions such as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982-1985) and Chairman of the Planning Commission (1985-1987). Singh made his mark.

Singh also served as the Secretary General of the South Commission, an independent economic policy think tank headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1987 to November 1990. Singh, who returned to India from Geneva in 1990, had also served as the economic advisor to the prime minister during the tenure of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar.

In March 1991, he became the chairman of the University Grants Commission. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991. Singh was the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2004.

In 1991, amidst a severe economic crisis, Dr. Singh was appointed as the Finance Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. Under Narasimha Rao’s government, Singh played a key role in introducing sweeping reforms that opened India’s economy to global markets.

Abolition of Licence Raj, liberalisation of trade policies and fiscal discipline have been the hallmarks of Manmohan Singh.
