Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a centenarian, has passed away at the age of 100. He passed away at his residence in Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by the Carter Center.

During his visit to India, Carter, the third US President to visit the country, was honored by having a village in Haryana named Carter Puri in his recognition. Carter, who lived to be 100 years old, was the longest-living president in US history. In a statement, US President Joe Biden expressed grief, stating, “Today, America and the world have lost an extraordinary leader, politician, and humanitarian.”

Carter is survived by his children—Jack, Chip, Chief, and Amy—as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His son, Chip Carter, said, “My father was a hero not only to me but to everyone who desires peace, human rights, and selfless love. The way he brought people together made the world our family. We thank everyone who honors his memory by continuing his beliefs.”

Even former President Donald Trump, who had political differences with Carter, expressed his respect. Trump said, “Carter loved and respected our country. He worked tirelessly to make America better. I give him the highest honors. He was a good man.”

Carter’s Special Connection with India

Carter was considered a friend of India. In 1977, after the emergency was lifted in India, he became the first US president to visit a victorious Janata Party-led India. During his visit, he addressed the Indian Parliament and opposed the idea of authoritarian rule. He reminded the world of the unique challenges faced by developing nations and emphasized that the path forward should not be through authoritarianism. On January 2, 1978, Carter famously stated, “Authoritarianism is not the way forward.”
