Corruption Case: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan Sentenced to 14 Years, Wife Bushra Gets 7 Years in Jail

Islamabad: A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to jail for their involvement in a corruption case related to the Al-Qadir Trust, which allegedly caused a loss of 190 million pounds to the national treasury. The court sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years and Bushra Bibi to 7 years in prison on Friday.
The ruling was delivered by Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the Anti-Corruption Court. The verdict had been postponed three times for various reasons before it was finally announced in a temporary court established at Adiala Jail.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed the case in December 2023 against 72-year-old Imran Khan, 50-year-old Bushra Bibi, and six others, accusing them of causing significant financial losses to the country’s treasury. The case revolves around the Al-Qadir Trust and its dealings that led to the alleged embezzlement of 190 million pounds.

The charges suggest that the funds, which were meant for the country’s treasury, were misused by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi for personal gains, including assisting a businessman in setting up a university. The businessman, along with others implicated in the case, has since fled the country, prompting legal action against Khan and his wife.
In connection with the case, Bushra Bibi, who is a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, was accused of acquiring 458 kanals of land in Zhilam for the Al-Qadir University, benefiting personally from the dealings.
Following the resolution of transactions with the businessman, Pakistan’s National Crime Agency had returned approximately 50 crore Pakistani rupees to the country. These funds were allegedly misused by the Khan couple and others involved in the case.
