Treason Allegations: Bangladeshi Actress Mehr Afroze Shan Arrested

According to additional DMP commissioner Rezaul Karim Malik, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Division team arrested Bangladeshi actress Mehr Afroze Shan on charges of treason for allegedly inciting sedition against the country.
Dhaka: Unrest has flared up again in Bangladesh. The house of former president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been set on fire, creating a volatile situation across the country. Amidst this turmoil, actress Mehr Afroze Shan has been arrested on charges of treason. She is currently being interrogated, which has caused anxiety among her fans.
In the midst of this, actress and director Mehr Afroze Shan has been detained on treason charges. On the night of Thursday (February 6), police took her into custody and began questioning her. According to additional DMP commissioner Rezaul Karim Malik, the arrest was made by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Division team based on allegations of sedition against the country.
Reports indicate that actress Mehr Afroze Shan had criticized the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus. In Jamalpur, where her family resides, local media reported that around 6 p.m. yesterday, students and local residents launched an attack on her house, following which the actress was arrested.
Mehr Afroze’s family has political ties. The actress herself ran as a reserved parliamentary candidate for the Awami League in the last election.

Her father, Mohammad Ali, had expressed interest in standing for nomination from the Awami League in the recent national elections. Additionally, Mehr’s mother, Begum Tahura Ali, served in the Bangladesh Parliament for two terms as a reserved female member. In 2004, Mehr married film director Humayun Ahmed, and they have two sons. Her husband passed away in 2012.
