Adani Bribery Case: Six U.S. Congress Members Write to Attorney General

Washington: Six U.S. Congress members have written a letter to the newly appointed U.S. Attorney General, Pamela Bedi, addressing “questionable” decisions made by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) during the previous Biden administration, specifically regarding the bribery allegations against the Adani Group.
The Congress members—Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Hripko, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmins, and Brian Babin—raised concerns in their letter dated February 10. They stated that the department’s actions in the case might jeopardize the close relationship between the U.S. and India, a key ally.
(The bribery allegations against Adani Group claim that Gautam Adani offered a $250 million)approximately ₹2,100 crores) bribe to Indian officials during a solar power agreement. Prosecutors have claimed that U.S. banks and investors concealed this information, although the Adani Group has denied these charges.
The Congress members highlighted that selective decisions in advancing or dropping cases, at times acting against American interests both domestically and internationally, could threaten relations with close allies like India. They emphasized the longstanding friendship between the two nations, which has grown through political, commercial, and cultural exchanges.
Furthermore, the letter pointed out that certain decisions made by the Biden administration could endanger the historic partnership between the U.S. and India, affecting their ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

The letter also referenced the strong relationship between the U.S. and India, which has continued to develop under former President Donald Trump, who always recognized the potential of a strong relationship between the two major economic and military powers. Prime Minister Modi has responded to these efforts by reinforcing India’s value as an invaluable U.S. ally, especially in the context of rising threats in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly from China.
