Trump Calls For US-Canada Merger
Washington: Just hours after Justin Trudeau’s resignation from the position of Prime Minister of Canada due to internal political turmoil, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump made a noteworthy statement regarding the potential ‘Canada-America merger’.
Yes, shortly after Justin Trudeau resigned as Prime Minister of Canada, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump proposed on Monday that Canada should merge with the United States and become its 51st state.
During Trump’s first term (2017-2021), relations with Trudeau were not very favorable. However, after Trump’s victory in the November 5 election, he had frequently discussed the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state. Trump had even posted about this idea on social media from time to time. On Monday, he made another tweet regarding this.
“I can appreciate his sense of humor…it’s just not realistic. We’re a sovereign country.”

Justin Trudeau’s resignation as Canadian Prime Minister.
“Many people in Canada want the country to merge with the U.S. and become its 51st state. If Canada merges, the need for large trade deficits and subsidies will no longer exist. Justin Trudeau knew this and has now resigned,” Trump posted on social media.
He further added, “If Canada merges with the U.S., there will be no tariffs, taxes will be reduced, and Canada will be fully secure from the ongoing threats posed by Russian and Chinese ships.”
Previously, Trump had threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if Canada failed to stop the illegal flow of drugs and migrants across its southern border with the U.S.
Canada’s Response
There has been little response from Canada to Trump’s new proposal.
Was India’s Opposition the Cause for Trudeau’s Resignation?
Justin Trudeau, 53, despite his growing popularity, was forced to resign on Monday due to internal disputes and political conflicts within his ruling Liberal Party. General elections are scheduled for this year, and Trudeau has stated that he will continue as Prime Minister until the party selects a new leader.
Trudeau, who has often been criticized for his pro-Khalistani stance, recently garnered widespread attention due to his anti-India comments. Specifically, he accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which led to severe criticism from India. His position on these issues led to growing opposition even within his own party. Following this, Trudeau announced his resignation.
