Trudeau stated that the “internal conflicts” made it impossible for him to be the “best choice” for the next election, and confirmed that he will remain in his position as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen for the Liberal Party.
Trudeau has decided to step down due to disagreements within his own Liberal Party.
A meeting of the Liberal Party’s caucus committee is scheduled for Wednesday in Ottawa. Media reports suggest that Trudeau’s resignation has come before this meeting.
For the past month, there have been internal disputes within the government led by Trudeau’s Liberal Party. Several of his party’s members of Parliament have raised concerns against his leadership. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has resigned from her position.
There has also been a strain in relations between Trudeau’s leadership and India regarding the issue of Khalistan separatists. The Trudeau government has been criticized by India for supporting statements made by Khalistani activists in Canada.
