Canada’s New Prime Minister Mark Carney: Elected as Leader of the Liberal Party
Amidst the ongoing trade battles with U.S. President Donald Trump and threats of dominance over Canada, the election of a new prime minister holds great significance, especially with the upcoming federal elections.
Mark Carney, the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, was elected by a majority vote. Following his election, Carney spoke out against U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. The 59-year-old leader did not hold back, stating, “We will not let him succeed.”
Carney is set to take over from outgoing Liberal leader and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. With federal elections approaching, the new prime minister’s election has garnered significant attention.
Canada is scheduled to hold elections by October, but there is a possibility they could be held earlier. Current polling trends favor the opposition Conservative Party.
In his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney addressed a crowd of supporters, stating that the United States under Trump’s leadership is attempting to control Canada. He remarked, “The aggressors want our resources, our water, our land, and our country, but they don’t have our best interests at heart.”
Carney won the Liberals leadership race today and will be sworn in as Prime Minister.

Carney, who previously led both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, defeated his main rival, former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who held several senior cabinet positions in the Liberal government elected in 2015. Carney won with an impressive 85.9% of the vote, leaving Freeland with only 8% of the votes.
