A German Christmas market hit by a car reportedly killing two and injuring at least sixty
Last Friday night a car rammed into a busy German Christmas market located in Magdeburg Germany, the aftermath was two deaths coupled with at least sixty other injuries. Officials have started to investigate the situation and it looks like this wasn’t an accidental situation.
The car crashed into the Christmas market in the area at approximately 7 PM. This was during the busy time of the weekend and numerous people including vendors were visiting the market. There was no time wasted as authorities detained the driver of the car right on the spot. German news agency DPA has also released a video of the man being detained right in the middle of the street.
Reports show that 15 of those injured are now in critical condition. This recent attack has caused utter chaos and fear within the community. There is also the fear that more people could pass away due to how severe the attacks were. In particular these attacks have struck a fear especially in this community due to the fact that Christmas market is a custom that has been around for hundreds of years. In order to prevent any such attacks to happen again, German authorities have decided to close off all Christmas market locations in the same country.
The police suspect that a 50 year old Saudi national, who immigrated to Germany in 2006, might be the perpetrator. Sabine Tamara Zieschang, who is the interior minister of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, shared that this man is a practicing med doctor in Bernburg, approximately 40 KMs south of Magdeburg.
Magdeburg, which is situated to the west of Berlin, is said to have a population of approximately 240,000, and has been a recent target of such violence. It comes almost eight years after a deadly truck put to use by an Islamist extremist drove through a packed Christmas market in Berlin, resulting in the deaths of 13 people in addition to many others being killed also.
German society never fails to incorporate Christmas markets in their celebrations, as there are examples that date back to the Middle Ages, and this has become an integral part of their culture. In addition, Western nations have been able to adopt these very traditions with relative ease, as well. More then 100 markets opened at the end of November in Berlin, which offered temperatures wafting with the smell of mulled wine, roasted almonds and bratwurst, and many food stands. More of these markets are available throughout the nation as well.
