In 1981, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Kuwait. Later, in 2009, Vice President Hamid Ansari toured Kuwait, and in 2013, the Kuwaiti Prime Minister visited India.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to the Gulf nation of Kuwait, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West Asian country in 43 years.

Modi is visiting Kuwait at the invitation of the Kuwaiti Emir, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with Kuwaiti leaders and interact with the Indian diaspora residing there. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this visit would strengthen the multifaceted relationship between India and Kuwait.

Preparations have already been made for the ā€˜Hala Modi Mega Diasporaā€™ event in Kuwait, where approximately 5,000 people are expected to participate.

The visit aims to further develop bilateral relations between the two nations. Modi will begin his engagements by receiving an official honor at the Bayan Palace. He will then participate in discussions with the Kuwaiti leadership, covering topics such as politics, trade, investment, energy, culture, and people-to-people ties, as well as actions required to enhance these areas. Later, he will attend a banquet, according to Aran Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to pave the way for better cooperation in the future and strengthen ties between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Notably, the Indian government prioritizes the welfare of its overseas workers. Currently, around 1 million Indians reside in Kuwait, and Modi plans to meet with the local Indian labour community as part of his itinerary.

Prime Minister Modi also announced his visit on social media platform X,

“Today and tomorrow, I will be visiting Kuwait. This visit will deepen Indiaā€™s historical ties with Kuwait. I look forward to meeting the Kuwaiti Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Emir. This evening, I will interact with the Indian diaspora in Kuwait and participate in the inaugural ceremony of the Arabian GulfĀ Cup,”Ā heĀ said.
