In his farewell address, delivered late Wednesday night by Indian Standard Time, U.S. President Joe Biden reflected on his presidency and issued a stark warning about the dangers of increasing power being concentrated in the hands of a few ultra-wealthy individuals. He raised concerns about the growing influence of the “technology-industrial complex” and its potential to undermine American rights and democracy.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden warned about the rising political power being formed in America. He referenced a warning given by former U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961 regarding the military-industrial complex, saying, “I am equally concerned about the potential rise of a technology-industrial complex that could harm our country.” Biden expressed deep concern about the rising dominance of powerful tech industries and their impact on the nation’s future.

Biden also made a statement about the highly anticipated ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which could end the prolonged violence in the Middle East. “We have sown the seeds for change, and it will take time to see the results, but these seeds will grow and bear fruit in the coming decades,” he said.

Initially, Biden had intended to run for president again but later withdrew due to his age and health concerns, allowing Kamala Harris to run. He endorsed Harris, who lost to Trump in November, as his successor.

In his farewell letter, Biden acknowledged that some of his promises had not been fulfilled, signaling a sense of regret over his presidency. “I believed America’s soul was at risk, and that is why I ran for president,” Biden wrote. “The very nature of who we are is still at risk.”

Biden’s political career began in 1972 when he was elected to represent his home state of Delaware in the U.S. Senate at the age of 30, making him the youngest senator in the country at the time. Before becoming vice president under Barack Obama, he ran for president in 1988 and 2008. After two terms as vice president, Biden was considered retired from politics but made a surprising comeback in 2020, defeating Trump in the presidential race.
