New Delhi: The central government has given its approval to allocate land for the construction of a memorial dedicated to Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement regarding the memorial, stating that a request had been made by Congress leadership to approve land for the memorial, which has now been accepted. After a Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the land for the memorial would be allocated.
The statement further mentioned that, with the formation of a trust for the memorial and the finalization of land allocation, formalities and proceedings for the memorial construction could now proceed.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who is recognized as a harbinger of economic reforms during the leadership of the Congress-led UPA government, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, completing ten years of significant service.
Initially, the central government had rejected the Congress party’s request to conduct the final rites at a separate memorial site. In response to this, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed dissatisfaction via Twitter, calling the decision an “intentional disrespect” to India’s first Sikh Prime Minister.
