Pahalgam Terror Attack: U.S. Warns of “Violent Civil Unrest” in Kashmir
Washington/Pahalgam: Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the United States has issued a warning about the potential for violent civil unrest in Kashmir and has urged American citizens not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir or within 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border.
This advisory came a day after terrorists opened fire in Pahalgam, killing 26 people — mostly tourists — marking one of the deadliest attacks in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory, stating:
“Terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Do not travel to this region, with the exception of visiting the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh.”
The advisory also added:
“Violence regularly occurs in this region and along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan. This includes tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.”
In response to the Pahalgam attack and citing cross-border links, India on Wednesday suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty and announced a downgrading of diplomatic relations with Pakistan, including the expulsion of Pakistan’s military attachés from New Delhi.
