Pakistan Alarmed by India's Move

Islamabad: In response to Pakistan’s earlier threat that “if the water of the Indus River is stopped, rivers of blood will flow in India,” India has given a fitting reply — not by stopping water, but by releasing it. As a result of India releasing water into the Jhelum River, Pakistan is now facing a flood-like situation.

Due to the rise in water levels near Muzaffarabad following the release, the local administration in Hattian Bala has declared an emergency. Announcements have been made in mosques, alerting residents.

This has created a fearful atmosphere among those living along the riverbanks. The development comes after India issued warnings of withdrawing from the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).

Meanwhile, Pakistan has accused India of violating international norms, claiming that this move goes against international treaties.

Pakistani media have reported that India released the water into the river without any prior notice. The PoK administration has accused India of engaging in deliberate “water terrorism.”

Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto had earlier threatened India, saying, “If you stop the water of the Indus River, your blood will flow.”

Temporary relief centers have been set up by the administration in Hattian Bala. “We are doing everything we can, but the damage is already substantial,” said the district administration.

The relationship between India and Pakistan has further deteriorated following a recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian government, taking a strong stance against Pakistan, has suspended the Indus Water Treaty. It has also decided to shut down the Attari border checkpost and reduce the strength of high commissions on both sides.

Pakistanis who entered India through this border with official documents have been instructed to return by May 1, 2025. Pakistani nationals residing in India under the SPEs visa have been asked to leave the country within 48 hours.
