Kolkata: Amidst the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, there has been an increase in the number of people attempting to enter India illegally. In this context, police in West Bengal have uncovered a major fake passport racket. Police have warned that stricter measures may be necessary to fully counter this growing threat.

The racket facilitated the illegal entry of several Bangladeshi nationals by producing fake Indian identity documents, including Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, voter ID cards, and birth certificates. These fake documents were being sold to infiltrators for hefty amounts. The price for an Aadhaar card was ₹15,000, a voter ID card ₹10,000, a birth certificate ₹12,000, and a PAN card ₹3,000.

So far, police in Bengal have arrested nine people in connection with this case. Among the arrested was Sameer Das, a court clerk from Barasat. Local residents had not suspected him of being involved in the racket, as he had been running a grocery shop for several years. However, after he suddenly became wealthy during the COVID-19 pandemic and built a large house, suspicions were raised. Investigators are now examining his phone and WhatsApp chats for further evidence.

There have also been allegations against five officers from the Kolkata Passport Service Centers (PSK), including ‘Verification and Approval’ officers, and policemen from various local police stations, who are suspected of assisting the illegal operations. In a significant breakthrough, Kolkata police arrested 61-year-old Abdul Hai, a retired sub-inspector from the passport division. His arrest brings the total number of people arrested in the last three months to nine.

The racket operated through travel agencies and provided at least 73 fake Indian passports to Bangladeshi nationals, which facilitated their illegal entry into India
