Russia-Ukraine war: New twist in war as Ukraine’s Zelenskyy says ready to cede occupied territory to Russia if…
Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his new subdued stance in another interview, stating that the Russia-Ukraine war needs to end and Kyiv was willing to give up territory to Russia in order to reach a ceasefire agreement with Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated a willingness to temporarily cede occupied territories to Russia in exchange for NATO protection over the areas currently under Ukrainian control. This marks a significant shift from his previous stance, which firmly opposed any territorial concessions.
In a recent interview, President Zelenskyy suggested that offering NATO membership to the regions not occupied by Russia could bring an end to the active phase of the conflict. He emphasized that any invitation to join NATO should encompass all territories within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders
President Zelenskyy also expressed a preference for reclaiming occupied territories through diplomatic negotiations rather than military action, citing concerns over potential loss of life and the uncertain success of military campaigns.
This development comes amid ongoing hostilities, with Russian forces maintaining control over parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, including Crimea, which was annexed in 2014. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, intensifying the urgency for a resolution.
The proposal’s success depends on several factors, including Russia’s response and the consensus of all 32 NATO member states, as unanimous agreement is required for new memberships. Additionally, international diplomatic efforts continue to play a crucial role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
