Trump-Modi Talks: China’s Response to Rising Tensions

The successful visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France and the United States, followed by fruitful talks with President Donald Trump, have led to a strong reaction from China.

China has expressed its displeasure regarding the Trump-Modi talks, emphasizing that it should not be part of bilateral negotiations. The closer ties between the United States and India have been highlighted by both leaders as central to ensuring a free, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, which has caused alarm in China.

China views the growing alliance between the US and India in the Indo-Pacific region as a threat to its own interests. In this context, Chinese foreign ministry spokespersons have responded, asserting that the region must remain a peaceful development zone in Asia-Pacific, rather than a platform for geopolitical rivalry.

China believes that the relationship and cooperation between the US and India should not turn into a problem for China or harm the interests of third countries, and it should be conducive to peace, stability, and prosperity. China also emphasized that creating special groups and engaging in block politics would not bring security, and it is not the way to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific and the world at large.

In a joint statement following the Modi-Trump talks, the two countries agreed to enhance India-US defense ties and launch a new initiative for the 21st century, called the ‘US-India Compact,’ aimed at speeding up military partnerships, accelerated trade, and technological cooperation.

Both leaders reaffirmed that the close partnership between the US and India is central to a free, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Among other things, they also discussed strengthening the Quad partnership, which has further escalated tensions with China.
