Amidst mutual tariff announcements and criticisms of India for imposing some of the world’s highest trade tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his negotiating skills.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump held a bilateral discussion today, with major topics including trade, defense, and immigration.

At a joint press conference following their bilateral talks, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Prime Minister Modi’s negotiation and communication skills.

Despite the criticism regarding mutual tariffs and the high trade tariffs imposed by India, President Trump praised Prime Minister Modi’s negotiation skills.

Speaking about the issue of higher taxes on American products, Trump pointed out that India is traditionally at the top of the list. In fact, some smaller countries impose higher tariffs, but India has high tariffs. He recalled a situation where Harley-Davidson was unable to sell their motorcycles in India due to the steep tariffs, saying, “The tariffs were very high.”

When asked during the press conference about who the better negotiator was, Trump praised Modi as the best negotiator. He acknowledged Modi’s ability to negotiate effectively, saying, “He is a tougher negotiator than me (and he is a better negotiator than me. There’s no competition).”

Trump signed an order to implement wide-ranging mutual tariffs to ensure that U.S. import tariffs align with the tariffs imposed by its trade partners. Trump said this action would “level the playing field.”

He emphasized that “no exceptions or exemptions will be made” and pointed out that “India imposes more tariffs than any other country.”

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump defended his mutual tariff policy, suggesting that other nations could avoid U.S. trade penalties by reducing or removing their own tariffs.

Modi-Trump Talks:

In other talks, Trump offered his help to resolve the China issue, but India rejected the offer, stating that it would handle the situation independently. Significant outcomes from their early discussions during Trump’s first month in office included the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack suspect Tahawwur Rana to India and progress on the F-35 jet agreement between the two countries.
