United States Increased Assistance to India

India ranks 4th and 5th among 15 countries in South and Central Asia in terms of U.S. aid, with its share of assistance in the past four years being 35% less than Pakistan’s $970 million. During the same period, it has notably increased compared to China’s $49.7 million.

New Delhi: Over the past four years, the Biden administration has provided India with $720 million in aid, with 64% of it being managed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which is now inactive. $20.1 million of this money has been allocated for democracy participation and civil society initiatives in India, which has sparked political controversy, according to U.S. government data analysis.

Among the 15 countries in South and Central Asia, India ranks 4th and 5th in U.S. aid, with its share being 35% lower than Pakistan’s $970 million in the past four years. In the same period, the aid to India has been significantly higher than China’s $49.7 million.

In South Asia, Bangladesh received $1.89 billion, which is about 162% higher than India’s share. In 2022, India received $250 million in aid, $20 million more than Pakistan, primarily for post-COVID initiatives.

Through USAID, a total of $462 million was allocated for health initiatives over the last four years, including various programs to fight HIV/AIDS. In the White House’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government, Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump previously described USAID as a “criminal organization” and agreed to shut it down.

The government’s economic advisor, Sanjeev Sanyal, accused USAID of playing a covert role in influencing policies in health and social sectors.

Those concerned about USAID’s intervention in Indian elections should also be equally concerned about the agency’s influence over India’s medical system and social policies. USAID effectively conducted the National Family Health Survey in India until two years ago, when it was stopped.

Elon Musk’s $21 million expenditure on India’s elections aligns with U.S. data for funds allocated for democracy participation and civil society initiatives in India.

In the 2024 election year, the United States allocated $5.5 million for voter participation initiatives. In 2023, an additional $6.1 million was spent under the same category. Over the past four years, the total commitment for democracy participation was $20.1 million, of which $13.25 million was disbursed.

“Why are we giving India $21 million? They have a lot of money. They are one of the highest-taxed countries in the world; their taxes are very high, so we can’t go there,” Trump told reporters.
