US President-Elect Donald Trump Faces Major Setback: Federal Appeals Court Overturns Ruling in Sexual Assault Case

In the 1990s, Donald Trump was accused of sexually assaulting columnist E. Jean Carroll in a high-end department store dressing room. A federal court has now overturned the lower court’s ruling in this civil case.
On December 30, 2024, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan overturned the $5 million award previously granted to E. Jean Carroll for “defamation and sexual assault.” Carroll had testified in 2023 that, after Trump entered the store’s dressing room in 1996, what started as a casual encounter escalated into a violent attack.

Despite repeatedly denying the assault, Trump had avoided the trial but briefly testified in a follow-up trial earlier this year, which led to a $83.3 million penalty.
This legal development is part of a series of ongoing challenges that Trump faces, just as he prepares to assume the presidency.
