Paris: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to France, arrived in the southern French city of Marseille and paid tribute to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar in the port city.

Marseille holds special significance in India’s search for independence. Prime Minister Modi mentioned in his X (formerly Twitter) account last night that the great Veer Savarkar had attempted to escape from here with great courage.

He wrote, “I would like to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time who insisted that Savarkar should not be handed over to British custody. Veer Savarkar’s bravery continues to inspire generations!” The Prime Minister received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Marseille.

Prime Minister Modi continued, “President Macron and I reached Marseille a short while ago. This visit will witness important programmes aimed at further connecting India and France. The inauguration of the Indian consulate will enhance people-to-people relations. I will also pay homage to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars.”

During British colonial rule, freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar attempted to escape while being transported to India aboard a British ship on July 8, 1910. He tried to escape by jumping from the ship’s door and swimming to the shore, where he was caught by French authorities. He was later handed over to the British authorities. Savarkar was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Cellular Jail of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which caused a major diplomatic dispute.

Prime Minister Modi is in Marseille with French President Emmanuel Macron to inaugurate India’s new Consulate General.

In addition to this, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the Mémorial des Morts (War Memorial) today to honor Indian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the World Wars. He will also visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, an international nuclear collaboration initiative.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister spoke at the AI Action Summit and the 14th India-France CEO Forum.
